IBPS Clerk Mains 2016-17 (Important Questions)

1. Two trains start at the same time from A and B and proceed towards each other at 80 km/hr and 95 km/hr respectively, when the trains meet, it is found that one has travelled 180 km more than the other. Find the distance between A and B.

A. 210 km
B. 2100 km
C. 2000 km
D. 2010 km
E. None of the above

Sol. The difference between the distance travelled by A and B after 1 hour = 95 – 80 = 15 km.
 Time taken by the trains to meet each other =180/15 = 12 hr.
 Total distance travelled by both trains in 1 hour = 80 + 95 = 175 km.
 Total distance between A and B = 175 × 12 = 2100 km.

2.  If Sohali walks from his home to office at 16 km/hr he is late by 5 min. If he walks at 20 km/hr, he reaches 10 min before the office time. Find the distance of his office from his house.

A. 22 km
B. 20 km
C. 18 km
D. 16 km
E. None of the above

Sol. S1 = 16 km/hr
 S2 = 20 km/hr
 S_1/S_2 = 4/5
 T_1/T_2 = 5/4
 Time difference = 15 min
 T_1= 5×15 = 75 min
 T_2 = 4×15 = 60 min
Distance = 1 × 20 = 20 km.

3. A is twice as fast as B and B is thrice as fast as C. The journey covered by C in 42 minutes will be covered by A in

A. 7 minutes
B. 14 minutes
C. 28 minutes
D. 63 minutes
E. None of these

Sol. Let C’s speed by x metres/min
Then, B’s speed = 3x metres/min and A’s speed = 6x metres/min.
Ratio of speeds of A and C = Ratio of times taken by C and A.
6x : x = 42 : y min
 6x/x=42/y
 y = 42/6 min = 7 min.

4. A train leaves a station A at 7 am and reaches another station B at 11 am. Another train leaves B at 8 am and reaches A at 11.30. The two trains cross one another at

A. 8.36 am
B  8.56 am
C. 9.00 am
D. 9.24 am
E. None of these

Sol. Let both trains meet after t hours since 7 a.m.
Distance between stations A and B = x km
x/4 × t + 2x/7 × (t – 1) = x  (speed=Distance/Time)
t/4+(2(t-1))/7=1
(7t+8t-8)/28=1 15t – 8 = 28
 15t = 28 + 8 = 36
 t = 36/15=12/5 hours
 2 hours 24 minutes
 Required time = 9:24 a.m.

5. In a box, there are 7 red, 8 blue and 6 green balls. One ball is picket up randomly. What is the probability that it neither red nor green?

A. 2/3
B. 3/4
C. 7/19
D. 8/21
E. 9/21

Sol. Total number of balls = (8 + 7 + 6) = 21
Let E = event that the ball drawn is neither red nor green = event that the ball drawn is blue.
 n(E) = 8
 P(E) = 8/21.

6. There are 4 blue balls, 3 red, and 2 green balls. 2 balls are drawn at random. What is the probability of all red or all green balls ?

A. 1/9
B. 4/9
C. 3/36
D. 1/36
E. None of these

Sol. Probability of all red = 3c2/9c2 = 3/36
     Probability of all green = 2c2/9c2 = 1/36

Required Probability = (3 + 1)/36 = 1/9.

7. On a certain sum of money, simple interest obtained is Rs 200 after 2 years at 10% per annum. What will be the compound interest obtained at the same rate and for the same time ?

A. Rs 220
B. Rs 210
C. Rs 230
D. Rs 200
E. None of these

Sol. Lets assume the sum invested to be 'P'.

According to the question,

200 = (P*10*2)/100
P = Rs 1000.

C.I. = 1000[{1 + (10/100)}^2 - 1] = Rs 210.

8. Deepak borrows Rs.5000 at simple Interest from a lender. At the end of 3 years, she again borrows Rs.2000 and settled that amount after paying Rs.5000 as interest after 8 years from the time she made the first borrowing. What is the rate of interest ?

A. 8%
B. 9%
C. 7%
D. 10%
E. None of these

Sol. SI for Rs.5000 for 8 years= (5000*r*8)/100
Again borrowed=2000
SI = (2000*r*5)/100
Total interest= [(5000*r*8)/100] + [(2000*r*5)/100] = 5000
400r + 100r = 5000
r = 10%.

9. 40 boys and 62 girls form a group for social work. During their membership drive, an equal number of boys and girls also join the group. How many members does the group have now, if the ratio of boys to girls is 2:3 ?

A. 112
B. 110
C. 106
D. 140
E. None of these

Sol. [40 + x / 62 + x ] = 2/3
x = 4
40 + 62 + 4 + 4 = 110.

10. If 8 examiners can examine a certain number of answer books in 12 days by working 5 hours a day, for how many hours a day would 4 examiners have to work in order to examine twice the number of answer books in 20 days ?

A. 16
B. 10
C. 14
D. 12
E. None of these

Sol. x – number of answer books
y – hours
[8 * 12 * 5] / x = [4 * 20 * y] /2x
y = 12.
