IBPS Clerk Mains 2016-17 (Important Questions-9)

1. The average age of Ramesh, Mahesh and Suresh is 22 years. 2 years ago, the average age of Ramesh and Mahesh was 19 years. Find the present age of Suresh ?

A. 20
B. 22
C. 24
D. 26
E. None of these

Sol. Lets assume ages of Ramesh, Mahesh and Suresh are x, y and z respectively.
Then, (x+y+z)/3 = 22
x + y + z = 66.

Also given, [(x-2)+(y-2)]/2 = 19
Solving, x+y = 42

Putting this in 1st equation, we get,
42 + z = 66
z = 24 years.

2. Ratio of distance travelled along the stream to the the distance travelled against the stream is 3:2. the time taken to cover the distance along the stream is 10% less then the time taken to cover the distance against the stream. If a person cover a distance of 21 km in 1 hr 24 min along the stream, then find the rate of current ?

A. 3
B. 5
C. 6
D. 7
E. None of these

Sol. Lets assume distance travelled along the stream to be '3d' km
Then, distance travelled against the stream will be '2d' km
Also, assume speed of person = x km/hr
             speed of curren = y km/hr

Now, 3d/(x+y) = 0.9*[2d/(x-y)]
Solving, we get, x = 4y.

Also given, 21/(x+y) = 1.4
Put, x = 4y in above equation, 21/5y = 1.4
Solving, y = 3km/hr.

3. In a bag there are 2 blue balls, 5 white balls and 3 red balls. 2 balls are drawn one by one without replacement. If the first ball comes out to be of red colour, then 5 more red coloured balls are added to bag. Find the probability that none of the balls drawn are of red colour ?

A. 13/20
B. 17/20
C. 19/20
D. 11/20
E. None of these

Sol. Probability tha none of the balls are red = 1 - (probability that both balls are red).
Now, probability of drawing 1st ball red = 3/10
Now, number of red balls = 3+5-1 = 7
Total number of balls = 2+5+3+5-1 = 14
Thus, probability of drawing 2nd ball red = 7/14 = 1/2
Probability of drawing both ball red = (3/10)*(1/2) = 3/20

Required Probability = 1 - 3/20 = 17/20.

4. Two jar A and B. Both contain 20 % milk. The quantity of jar A is 4 times than that of quantity of jar B. both jar mixtures are mixed and form new mixture C and 15 litres of water is added .The final ratio of water to milk is now 19:4. Find the initial quantity (in litres) of milk in jar B ?

A. 10
B. 4
C. 5
D. 6
E. None of these

Sol. Initial milk in jar B = 0.2x
     Initial milk in jar A = 0.8x

After mixing the two and adding 15 ltrs water,
Amount of milk  = x
Amount of water = 4x + 15

Thus, (4x+15)/x = 19/4
Solving, x = 20
Therfore, initial milk in jar B = 0.2*20 = 4 litres.

5. The marked price of a shirt and a trouser are in the ratio 1 : 2. The shopkeeper gives 40% discount on the shirt. If the total discount on the shirt and trousers is 30%, the discount offered on the trousers is ?

A. 20
B. 25
C. 30
D. 35
E. None of these

Sol. Lets assume M.P. of shirts Rs x
And M.P. of trousers be Rs 2x
Also discount on trouser to be a%

Then, 0.6x + 2x(100-a)/100 = 0.7*3x
Solving, a = 25%.

A. 671
B. 771
C. 541
D. 877
E. None of these

Sol. 2*1 + 2 = 4
     4*2 + 3 = 11
    11*3 + 4 = 37
    37*4 + 5 = 153
   153*5 + 6 = 771

7. 3, 10, 22, 39, 61, _

A. 86
B. 84
C. 83
D. 88
E. None of these

Sol. 3 + 7 = 10
    10 + 12= 22
    22 + 17= 39
    39 + 22= 61
    61 + 27= 88

8. 6, 6, 8, 14, 26, _

A. 42
B. 44
C. 46

     6 + 2^2 - 2 = 8
     8 + 3^2 - 3 = 14
    14 + 4^2 - 4 = 26
    26 + 5^2 - 5 = 46

9. 1, 3, 9, 31, 129, _

     9*3 + 4 = 31
    31*4 + 5 = 129
   129*5 + 6 = 651

10. 5, 11, 24, 44, 71, _

A. 102
B. 105
C. 112
