1. An item sold at 10% discount gives 17% profit, what would be the percentage profit if discount increased to 15% ?
A. 12%
B. 11%
C. 10%
D. 10.5%
E. None of these
Sol. Lets assume C.P. to be 100
Then S.P. will be 117 (as profit 17%)
Now, 117 = (90/100)*M.P. (As discount is 10%)
M.P.= 130
When discount 15%, S.P. = (85/100)*130 = 110.5
Thus, profit % = 10.5 %.
2. A sells a horse to B for Rs 4860, thereby losing 19%, B sells it to C at a price which would have given A 17% profit. Find B's gain.
A. Rs 2160
B. Rs 2610
C. Rs 1260
D. Rs 2260
E. None of these
Sol. C.P. for A = 4860*[100/(100-19)] = 6000
S.P. with 17% profit for A = 6000*[(100+17)/100] = 7020
B's gain = 7020 - 4860 = 2160.
3. A merchant sold an article at a profit of 40%. Had he bought the article for 20% less and sold it at a discount of 20%, he would have gained Rs. 224. What was the merchant’s profit from the sale of the article?
A Rs.700
B Rs.280
C Rs.560
D Rs.980
E.None of these
Sol. Asume the cost price to be = Rs 100x
Now, selling price will be = Rs 140x (as 40 % profit)
If the article is bought for 20% less, cost price becomes = Rs 80x
After 20% dicount selling price is = 140x - (20*140x/100) = Rs 112x
Now Profit for this is given Rs 224, so,
112x-80x = 224
x=7
Now original cost price = 100*7 = Rs 700
And selling price = 140*7 = Rs 980
Thus profit is = Rs (980-700) = Rs 280.
4. The ratio of the marked price to the cost price of a mobile is 5 : 4. The discount percentage offered before it was sold and profit/loss percentage made on it were in the ratio 3 : 4. Find the profit/loss percentage?
A.12.9%
B.14.48%
C.13.8%
D.Cannot be determined
E.None of these
Sol. Let the marked price = 5x and cost price = 4x
Discount percentage = 3y and profit/loss percentage = 4y. Then, SP = 5x(100 – 3y/100) = 4x (100+4y/100)
500 – 15y = 400 + 16y
y = 100/31. Hence, profit percentage = 4y = 400/31, y = 12.9%
5. A shopkeeper buys an article for Rs. 400 and marks it for sale at a price that gives him 80% profit on his cost. He, however, gives a 15% discount on the marked price to his customer. Calculate the actual percentage profit made by the shopkeeper.
A.62%
B.64%
C.53%
D.54%
E.None of these
Sol. Cost Price = 400.
In oredr to make a profit of 80%, the Mark Price should be 720.
But on giving a discount of 15%, the selling price became 612.
Hence profit = ( 612 - 400 ) = 212 and profit % = ( 212 / 400 ) x 100 = 53%.
6. The sale price of an article including the sale tax is Rs. 616. The rate of sale tax is 10% . If the shopkeeper has made a profit of 12%, the cost price of the article is [The Pearson Guide book]
A. Rs 500
B. Rs 515
C. Rs 550
D. Rs 600
E. None of these
Sol. 110% of S.P. = 616
= S.P. = Rs.(616 x 100/110) = Rs.560.
C.P. = Rs (100/112 x 560)
= Rs 500.
7. A shopkeeper gives 12% additional discount on the discounted price, after giving an initial discount of 20% on the labeled price of a mobile. If the final sale price of the mobile is 704. then what is its labelled price?
A. Rs 844
B. Rs 920
C. Rs 1000
D. Rs 1100
E. None of these
Sol. Let the labeled price be Rs. x
88% of 80% of x = 704
=> x = (704 x 100 x 100/88 x 80)= 1000.
8. The difference between the cost price and sale price of an article is Rs. 500 if the profit is 20%. The selling price is:
A. Rs 4000
B. Rs 1500
C. Rs 3000
D. Rs 3300
E. None of these
Sol. C. 3000
9. By selling 15 oranges, a fruit seller gains the selling price of 1 orange. Calculate his gain percentage
A. 7.14%
B. 6.14%
C. 8%
D. 8.41%
E. None of these
Sol. SP of 1orange = 1
SP of 15 orange = 15
Profit = 1
CP = 15 – 1 = 14
Profit % = (1/14)×100 = 7.14%.
10. The ratio of the cost price to the marked price of a watch is 3:5 and ratio of the percentage profit to the percentage discount is 5:3.Find the profit percentage ?
A. 13.34%
B. 16.65%
C. 16.43%
D. 17.5%
E. None of these
Sol. Cp:mp = 3x:5x = 300 : 500
Profit = 2x
P:d = 5:3
(5x×300)/100 +(3x×500)/100 = 100
30x = 100
X =(100/30) = 3.33%=> 5x = 16.65%
