11. Twenty-four men can complete a work in 18 days and twenty women can complete the same work in 16 days. Thirty-six men started the work and left after 3 days. Now ten women started the work and left after 4 days. What amount of left is completed by now ?

A. 5/8
B. 2/7
C. 3/8
D. 1/4
E. None of these

Sol. 24m in 18 days, so 36 in 24*18/36 = 12 days
In 3 days, they did 1/12 * 3 = 1/4 work
20w in 16 days, so 10 in 20*16/10 = 32 days
In 4 days, they did 1/32 * 4 = 1/8 work
So completed work = 1/4 + 1/8 = 3/8.

12. A box contains 150 tickets (numbered 1 to 150). Find the probability of drawing a ticket containing a multiple of 3 or 6.

A. 1/3
B. 2/3
C. 43/150

13. An article is marked 25% above the cost price and it gets a 10% discount also. Find the profit percent if the seller cheats while selling by using 10% less weight ?

A. 23%
B. 22%
C. 20%
D. 25%
E. None of these

Sol. Let CP = 100
So MP = 125
So SP after discount = 90/100 * 125 = 112.5
Now seller selling 10% less in weight so CP = Rs 90
Now CP = 90, SP = 112.5
So profit % = 22.5/90 * 100 = 25%.

14. X and Y started a business with investments Rs 1800 and Rs 2400 respectively. After 6 months, Z also joined them with investment of Rs 4000. If after a year a total of Rs 42,000 is earned as profit, what is the share of Z ?

A. 25,500
B. 23,000
C. 20,000
D. 28,000
E. None of these

Sol. X : Y : Z
1800*12 : 2400*12 : 4000*6
9 : 12 : 10
10/(9+12+10) * 42,000 = 13548.

15. A rectangular box has length, breadth and height in the ratio 7 : 2 : 7. These are respectively increased by 20%, 5% and 50%. What is the percentage increase in volume of rectangular box ?

A. 89%
B. 85%
C. 90%
D. 96%
E. None of these

Sol. 7x, 2x and 7x, so volume = 98.
Now when increase is done, ratio is
(120/100)*7x , (105/100)*2x , (150/100)*7x
New volume = 185.22
% increase = (185.22-98)/98 * 100 = 89%.

1. X’s present age is 1/3 of Y’s and Y’s present age is 9/13 of Z’s present age. The sum of their present ages is 125 years. What is the sum of ages of Y and X ?

A. 45
B. 40
C. 50
D. 60
E. None of these

Sol. Y = 9Z/13 and X = 1/3(9Z/13) = 3Z/13
So 3Z/13 + 9Z/13 + Z = 125
Solve, Z = 65,
so X = 3*65/13 = 15
Y is then 9*65/13 = 45
So X+Y = 15+45 = 60

2. Two varieties of wheat at Rs 42 per kg and Rs 50 per kg respectively are mixed in the ratio 5 : 3. The mixture is then sold at Rs 36 per kg. What is the loss % ?

A. 33%
B. 25%
C. 20%
D. 16%
E. None of these

Sol. Let CP of mixture is x
By method of allegation:
A……………….B
42………………50
. …………x
(50-x) (x-42)
Then, (50-x)/(x-42) = 5/3
Solve, x = 45 = CP
SP = 36
So loss% = [(45-36)/45] * 100

3. X can complete 4/5th of a piece of work in 12 days and Y can complete 1/3rd of the same work in 9 days. If both X and Y work together, they can do 7/15th of that work in how many days ?

A. 4.5
B. 5
C. 9
D. 8
E. None of these

Sol. X can do 4/5th of the work in 12 days, so whole work in 5/4 * 12 = 15 days.
Y can do 1/3th of the work in 9 days, so whole work in 3/1 * 9 = 27 days.
X and Y together can complete whole work in 15*27/(15+27) = 15*9/14 days.
So 7/15th work in 7/15 * (15*9/14) = 9/2 days.

4. Rs 310 are to be divided among X, Y and Z in the ratio 1/2 : 1/3 : 1/5, but by mistake it was divided in the ratio of 2 : 3 : 5 among them respectively. How much did X lost in this transaction ?

A. 85
B. 75
C. 20
D. 62
E. 88

Sol. Ratio in which divided = 2 : 3 : 5
Actual ratio = 1/2 : 1/3 : 1/5 or 15 : 10 : 6
Both ratios show that X and Y have lost and Z has gained the most.
X got = 2/(2+3+5) * 310 = 62
Actually X would have got = 15/(15+10+6) * 310 = 150
So X lost 150 – 62 = 88.

5. The train goes from station X to Y and back to station X in 32 hours where total distance covered by train is 1800 km. The train halted for two hours after reaching station Y. If the average speed of train from X to Y is 20% more than that from B to A, what is the speed of train from X to Y station ?

A. 72 km/hr
B. 75 km/hr
C. 66 km/hr
D. 60 km/hr
E. None of these

Sol. Total distance is 1800
So 900 from X to Y and then 900 from Y to X
Let speed in return journey is a, then in X to Y is (120/100)*a = 6a/5
So 900/a + 900/(6a/5) = 30
Solve, a = 55
So from X to Y is 6*55/5 = 66 km/hr.

Directions (6-10) : What should come in place of question mark (?) in the following questions ?

1. 1 year ago, Rajesh was six times as old as his son. Six years hence, Rajesh’s age will exceed his son’s age by 15 years. The ratio of the present ages of Rajesh and his son is?

A. 15 : 4
B. 19 : 4
C. 15 : 2
D. 17 : 2
E. None of these

Sol. Lets assume, ages of Rajesh and his son is = 6x, x

According to the question,

(6x + 1 + 6])– (x + 1 + 6) = 15
5x = 15
x = 3.

Thus, ratio = 6x + 1 : x + 1 = 19 : 4.

2. A person cover 32km downstream is 120 minutes and same person cover 48 km upstream in 720 minutes. Then find the rate of current ?

A. 4kmph
B. 5kmph
C. 3kmph
D. 2kmph
E. None of these

Sol. Lets assume the speed of person in still water is 'x' km/hr
And also assume the speed of current to be 'y' km/hr.

According to the question,

x + y = 32*60/120 = 16

and

x - y = 48*60/720 = 4

Solving these, we get,

y = 6 km/hr.

3. Sum of two numbers is 264. If the first number is 20% more than the second number then, what is the value of second number ?

A. 140
B. 164
C. 120
D. 114
E. None of these

Sol. Lets assume the second no. to be 'x'
Then first no. will be = 1.2x

According to the question,

4. Pipe A can fill a tank in 5 hrs and tap B can empty the same tank in 10 hrs. Both are opened simultaneously for 2 hrs. How much water is there in the tank if capacity of tank is 480 L ?

A. 100 L
B. 96 L
C. 120 L
D. 86 L
E. None of these

Sol. Time taken to fill the tank completly when both are open,

= (1/5 - 1/10)

= 10 hrs.

It takes 10 hrs to fill = 480 L
Thus, in 2 hrs they will fill = 480*2/10 = 96 L.
