1. The average age of a family of five members is 24. If the present age of the youngest member is 8 year, what was the average age of the family at the time of birth of youngest member?

A. 16 years
B. 20 years
C. 18 years
D. 14 years

Sol. Total age of five members = 120
Before 8 years, Total age of the family at the time of birth of youngest member = 120 – 40 (5*8) = 80
Average age of the family at the time of birth of youngest member = 80/4 = 20.

2. Five years ago, the average age of Simi’s age that time and Tia’s age that time was 17 years. Five years from now, the respective ratio between Simi’s age and Tia’s age at that time will be 4:5, what is Simi’s present age?

A. 22
B. 20
C. 18
D. 19
E. None

Sol. The average age of Simi’s age that time and Tia’s age that time = 17 years
Total age at that time = 34
Total age after 10 years = 34 + 20 = 54
Simi’s age after 5 years = 54 * (4/9) = 24
Simi’s present age = 24 – 5 = 19.

3. Ratio of Rani’s age to Sheena’s age was 5 : 8 four years ago. Sheena’s present age is 6 years greater than Rani’s age 6 years after. Find the ratio of the present ages of Sheena and Rani. 

A. 2 : 3
B. 3 : 2
C. 4 : 5
D. 5: 6
E. None of these

Sol. Rani = A, Sheena = B
4 yrs ago, A-4/B-4 = 5/8
8A – 5B = 12
After 6 yrs, A + 6 = B – 6
Solve the equations, A = 24, B = 36

4. Ravi’s age was one third of his father’s 18 years ago. Now he is half the age of his father. What is the difference in the present ages of father and Ravi? 

A. 72
B. 36
C. 25
D. 20
E. 30

Sol. Ravi’s present = x, father’s = 2x
Then, (2x-18) = 3 (x – 18)
Solve, x = 36
So difference = 2x-x = x = 36.

5. The sum of ages of Sonu and Monu is 60 at present. Also Sonu’s age was five time that of Monu 6 years ago. What will be the age of Monu 5 years after? 

A. 14
B. 20
C. 18
D. 19
E. 22

Sol. Monu = x, Sonu = 60-x
60-x – 6 = 5*(x – 6)
solve, x = 14
monu’s 5 years after = x+5 = 19.

6. At present  Priya is twice Sariga’s age. 8 yrs hence the respective ratio between Priya and Sariga’s age will be 22 :13, What is Sariga’s present age ?

A. 26
B. 36
C. 18
D. 20
E. None of these

Sol. P = 2S
2s+8/s+8 = 22/13
26s+104 = 22s+176
4s = 72
S= 18yr.

7. The ratio of present age of Kaviya and Lakshmi is 6:7, the ratio of their ages after 8yrs would be 8:9, What is Kaviya’s present age?

A. 20
B. 24
C. 28
D. 30
E. None of these

Sol. 6x+8/7x+8 = 8/9
54x+72 = 56x+64
2x = 8
x = 4
K=6*4 = 24yrs.

8. The sum of the present ages of Jai, Prem and Saran is 93 years. Ten years ago, the ratio of their ages was 2:3:4. What is the present age of Sara?

A. 31
B. 38
C. 21
D. 28
E. None of these

Sol. J+P+S = 93
J-10:P-10:S-10 = 2:3:4
93-30 = 63
Saran age = 63*4/9 = 28+10 = 38.

9. Four years ago, the ratio of the ages of A and B was 5 : 9. 8 years hence the ratio will be 2 : 3 respectively. Find the present age of B? 

A. 25
B. 20
C. 40
D. 60
E. 24

Sol. Let 4 years ago A’s age = 5x, B’s age = 9x
Then 4+8 = 12 years after – (5x+12)/(9x+12) = 2/3
Solve, x = 4
B’s present age = 9x+4 = 40.

10. After 6 years, A’s age will be 3/7th of B’s age. Also 10 years ago, ratio of ages of A and B was 1 : 5. What is A’s present age? 

A. 20
B. 25
C. 24
D. 18
E. 50

Sol. Let 10 years ago, A’s age = x, B’s age = 5x
After (10+6) = 16 years, (x+16) = (3/7) (5x+16)
Solve, x = 8
So A’s present age = x+10 = 18.
